ELECTRIC LOVE WEIGELA

                             MR. BOWLING BALL

After spending time with pros at three separate nurseries, showing them each pictures of The Bluffs Road retaining wall, providing pertinent information regarding wall height/depth, sun exposure and the need for low growing plants, low maintenance plants (no deadheading and constant watering), these are the plants that have been decided on and will be planted Spring 2024.   The flowering shrub is "Electric Love Weigela", which grows 1-2 feet in both height and width.  It is deciduous (will shed its leaves annually) but will provide color to the wall in the spring/summer months.  The evergreen shrub is "Mr. Bowling Ball", which grows 2-3 feet in both height and width (it's evergreen).  We're also considering adding unique/colorful boulders to the wall (nothing huge...appropriate size), when our finances permit.  We're shopping around for a piece of metal art that will cover the electrical box and plug that the low-voltage lights in the wall are connected to.   The reason for planting Spring 2024...the weeds were so deep and widespread that we decided to use chemicals to get rid of them.   We pulled and pulled, and they just kept coming back with a vengeance!   So far, we've had the wall chemically sprayed three times.  Recently the remainder of the Hosta and Stella D'Oro Daylilies were manually dug up.   A large container of Preen Extended Control has been purchased that can and will be put down this fall as well as Spring 2024.

If anyone would like to make a donation toward the purchase of a boulder, let one of the Trustees know.

THE TREES IN THE TWO ISLANDS ON THE BLUFFS ROAD WERE LOOKED AT BY A PRO.  THEY ARE DISEASED AND DYING.   The Cause of Death (dying):  MULCH BEING CONSTANTLY ADDED AND SMOTHERING THE TRUNKS!!!  "TREE TRUNKS HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FLARE"

The trees are going to be taken out and replaced with low plants that won't grow very large and won't require a lot of maintenance.   Our concern with trees:  visibility, liability and damage.  It has been suggested that we also put identical style pots in the islands in the spring/summer and fill them with low maintenance (no deadheading) colorful flowering plants.  We have a connection in our community where we can get the flowering plants at a great discount.

UPDATE

The trees in the two islands on The Bluffs Road have been removed.  Both islands have also been weeded.  In the Spring, some dirt will have to be removed from the islands so that the level of the dirt falls below the top of the concrete edge.
